- Ralp Waldo Emerson -
Growing up in a small village in Brandenburg, nature has always played a big role in my life. Surrounded by lakes, forests and meadows, animals, plants and stones became my best friends. As an only child, I spent a lot of time with myself. Growing up in the GDR, my parents were rarely at home. Early on I learned phrases like “No pain, no gain”, “Life is not a pony farm” and “Pull yourself together”. I measured my own worth by how much I accomplished in life and what other people thought of me.
My love for nature led me to study biology at the University of Potsdam, the Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of Tasmania, Australia. I loved studying, but at the same time I put myself under extreme pressure to succeed. In 2010, I graduated at the top of my class. My path took me further up the academic career ladder to Frankfurt am Main. Here I researched urban and rural rabbits for the next 5 years.
But even though I was successful in my work, I felt unfulfilled, empty and depressed. So I worked even harder and finished my PhD in 2016. Almost too late, I realized how toxic the academic environment was for me. After many years of high pressure in the scientific system, many symptoms of illness had appeared that I could no longer ignore.
In 2015, I had the great privilege of participating in shamanic rituals of the indigenous Ainu people in Japan. I learned to connect with everything around me and understand nature's messages.
I used to see the world in purely scientific terms: I observed, collected data and learned facts. Today I perceive nature with all my senses and know that everything is connected. The answers to life's big and small questions are there, we just need to engage with nature on a deep level.
Since 2017 I have been intensively studying topics such as shamanism, spirituality and nature experience - both theoretically and practically. At the Foundation for Shamanic Studies Europe I regularly take part in further training, practical days and community meetings. I share my knowledge about biology and shamanism and continually in lectures and build bridges between the two worlds.
