Welcome to my Website!
My name is Dr. Madlen Ziege, I am an active Biologist since 2009. My last name “Ziege” in German translates to “Goat” in English; perhaps I was pre-determined to be a Biologist.
I have studied and worked in Germany, France, Mexico, Canada, Japan and Tasmania. Specialising in the behaviour of animals and ecology of plants, I have created the “urban to rural gradient”, I have written 2 books and have authored over 30 scientific publications.
My life flipped upside-down on me during my PhD studies at the University of Frankfurt. I realised almost too late how toxic the scholastic environment really is. I pushed forward, completing my PhD in 2016, but suffered what I deem today as massive health issues. I ended up with common health symptoms amongst scientist such as hormonal imbalances, burn out syndrome and eating disorders.
The original reason I wanted to become a Biologist was to learn to connect to nature and reality. I now realize that the scholastic approach to biology often, severs that connection, creating generations of numb scientists disconnected from reality, who are often even harming life during their research. Rather than learning facts by hard or collecting data, I am now present with nature on a deeper level simply through experience. I learned how indigenous cultures get in touch with animals, plants and even stones. Today, I see everything in life to be intertwined. If we want to successfully tackle ecological problems it is necessary to reconnect with nature on a deep level. By doing so, we also reconnect with ourselves which is the pre-condition for a happy and full-filled life.
In my upcoming book “The unbelievable power of nature; how stress guides animals and plants”, I put forward the notion that the concept that we call “Stress” is not the evil villain we have been made to believe, instead is an integral part of life, often poorly represented and misunderstood.
